Maritime Meanderings - San Diego, California

We based ourselves in Anaheim for the last 6 days of our holiday, mostly because of the proximity to Disneyland. When we got to Anaheim we bought a 'Southern California Adventure Pass'  which gave us 3 days in Disneyland, a day at Universal Studios, and a day at San Diego Sea World. This chapter of the blog, if you couldn't guess from the title, is all about our trip to San Diego.

Heading for Sea World, and Calum mentions the existence of a US Naval Museum in San Diego on the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Much to Danielle's disgust, we decided to do a flying visit to the Midway before heading off to Sea World; after all, Sea World is open until 7pm...!

We were only there for 1 1/2 hours or so, so we didn't get to do much looking around, but we did cover the important bits - the flight and hangar decks, and the gift shop. Cam had a great time looking at the planes on the flight deck, of which there were many. Some of them might even be recognised by those of you reading that live / have lived in Nowra. If you aren't interested in seeing a lot of photos of aircraft, scroll down NOW!!!!! You have been warned........

From the Midway, we resumed our planned outing for the day at Sea World, which was only 10 minutes away. Sea World was amazing. We took changes of clothes, but had no real intention of doing any of the rides - we were there to see the animals.

I got to feed the seals before we went to watch the sea lion show - but Calum missed the moment where a passing seagull snatched a pilchard out of my hands as I was trying to entice a sea lion up for it. Can't get a good photographer anywhere.

We wandered around the park to the next show - Shamu the Orca (that's a killer whale for the uninitiated...). All the seats in the bottom tier were labelled 'splash zone'. Hmmm.... better sit a little higher up.

The next show we saw was the dolphin show. After the Orca's, it was OK, but a bit underwhelming. Too much 'people', not enough 'dolphins'. There were also birds - parrots and cranes - involved in the show, but they pretty much only did fly pasts before they were whisked back to whence they came...

bird people. Or is it people birds...?

There was more to see other than just the show, including turtles, an aquarium, penguins, polar bears, Beluga whales and a walrus!
Na na na na na na na nah ... Bat Ray!

We didn't get to do or see everything at Sea World, but that's OK - we saw the bits that mattered to us. And it was a long, quiet drive back to Anaheim.
